Abstract: As Hong Kong faces a significant demographic transformation with a rapidly aging population, this Honours Project, titled "Exploration of Statutory Retirement Age in Hong Kong Studies," investigates the implications of extending the statutory retirement age. This study is anchored in a theoretical framework incorporating Activity Theory, Role Theory, and Continuity Theory to explore the psychosocial and potential economic benefits of adjusting retirement policies. Utilizing a qualitative research approach, the study comprises in-depth interviews with 'young elders' in Hong Kong to understand their perspectives on and readiness for extended employment. The preliminary findings indicate a general willingness among older adults to continue working past retirement age. However, health concerns, workplace integration, and prevailing societal attitudes towards ageing and retirement present significant hurdles. This project highlights the complex interplay between economic needs and the social and psychological well-being of the elderly, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive policy framework that supports extended employment in a way that respects and enhances the lives of older adults. While the focus on qualitative interviews limits the generalizability of the results, it offers valuable insights into the personal experiences and expectations of the elderly workforce, setting the stage for future research on targeted policy measures and their broader societal impacts.
